BLOGPOST #6 - CASE SCENARIO

As a nursing student, what can YOU contribute in the healthcare industry where Nursing Informatics technology is not yet implemented and has not yet migrated to OSS/FS (OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE/ FREE SOFTWARE?

Technology is a great help in our lives, especially in the healthcare industry. But modernization is often implemented gradually and we cannot deny that there are still hospitals with no nursing informatics applications. So what can we do in this kind of situation? As a nursing student, it is important to learn about the basics. Many hospitals have survived being operated without having the latest technology or having electronic health records (EMRs). The point is that a few decades ago, they ran hospitals without it so why can't we, as nurses live without it also?

Flexibility and adaptability are few important characteristics that a nurse should have. Therefore, as a nursing student, learning and mastering the fundamentals of nursing practice is an essential thing to do. How do we do that? We learn about nursing histories, theories, and concepts in nursing school. We perform nursing skills according to the standard guidelines of practice. We are taught how to document patient's vital information manually, or process important patient files ourselves. And in a world where the healthcare industry hasn't implemented nursing informatics and used OSS/FS yet, we should be able to render our services by performing the basics properly, efficiently, and masterfully so that our superiors can also delegate tasks effectively and devised a detailed plan on how to improve the workflow in the hospitals until modernization comes to them and reach the hospitals. And we must always remember that technology is only supposed to assist us and make things easier not do the actual job itself, without it things will be very much indeed difficult but it's sure always doable.
